You don’t need the support of a major record label to get your music out there. Here are five tips for marketing your own music.

1. Connect with fan accounts to plan promotions.

If you have even a modest following, then it’s likely that several fan accounts have been created to support you. These are the Twitter and Instagram accounts made by dedicated fans solely to celebrate and promote your music.

Fan accounts can be one of your best marketing tools. They already have a strong connection with your target audience and substantial followings of their own. Work with them to plan promotions for your next release or show.

For example, you may provide your favorite fan accounts with exclusive teasers or behind-the-scenes photos to share. You can work with them to hold giveaways, plan to get your own hashtag trending, etc.

2. Share a teaser to pique people’s interests.

When you’re ready to release a new song, take a page out of the film industry’s book. In the same way, a production company releases a movie trailer, you can share a teaser for your new song with your fans.

3. Collaborate with other musicians to double the size of your audience.

One of the best ways to reach new listeners is to collaborate with other musicians. Find artists whose music is similar enough to yours that both audiences will enjoy listening to other artists. Then, after the song is released, continue to work together to promote it.

4. Post about your music as if you were your own biggest fan.

When it comes to promoting your music on your own social media, think about how a dedicated fan would post about your music. Don’t be shy when it comes to sharing. Hype your work up on your feed.

Reply to and retweet fans who talk about your music online. Post about why you love new song and why listeners will like it, too. Utilize your Instagram story as well. In essence, post about your music the way you’d post about your favorite artist.

5. Add your own music to public Spotify and YouTube playlists.

Anyone with a Spotify account can create public playlists. Theme them after moods, times of day, holidays, or whatever else you can think of. Then, add a few of your own songs along with some of your other favorites.

You can also add your own music videos to public YouTube playlists. Because YouTube is more visual than Spotify is, you should consider mixing in videos from your live performances as well as music videos.
